Septarian or septarian nodules are concretions containing angular cavities or cracks, called "septaria" which have become filled with calcite and aragonite. A concretion is a hard, compact mass of rock that often forms around decaying organic matter. In the case of septarian nodules the concretions formed around decaying sea-life in a marine environment.Septarian nodules are an incredible version of fossilized mud or mud concretion. These nodules were formed on an ancient sea bed or floor. These nodules or concretions were formed 50 million to 70 million years ago and feature amazing crystal formations of yellow calcite, brown aragonite, white or clear barite and the grey rock (limestone) forming the nodule.
